ACC Pub Ink and Sparkk are thrilled to discuss the upcoming third season of Turtletastic, which we can exclusively reveal will be titled Turtletastic: The Great Grappling Adventure.
While the first season took place in Bates College, Maine, and the second in Howard County, Maryland, the third season relocates to Fort Collins, Colorado. In the wake of the shocking Turtletastic Season 2 finale, Stone and Timothy are apart, but that doesn’t mean their lives aren’t about to come crashing back together in a “most unexpected way”, revealed co-creator and showrunner Craig Selbrede.
“So there are a lot of different nuances and angles to the direction we take with these episodes,” Selbrede explained. “But the gist is, Stone is at a turning point and we’re seeing it through the lens of the sport of wrestling. Which you can probably tell from the season’s subtitle.”
Selbrede has taken up wrestling as a hobby in recent months at Fort Collins’ Horsetooth Hybrid Grappling Club, an experience which acts as the foundation for the events portrayed in this season. “It’s just been fantastic,” Selbrede gushed. “A great experience with a great group of people, and it felt like the natural evolution of Stone’s journey to see how a sport like this challenges him.”
Spencer Ainsworth, an NCWA National Qualifier, acts as an advisor to the wrestling component of this season in addition to acting in the season and coaching Selbrede at Horsetooth Hybrid.
“It was really, really helpful to me to get Spencer’s perspective and experience to ground this very eclectic, very nonsensical story,” Selbrede revealed. “I’m coming at this story from a place of knowing very little, and he is a very patient, very dedicated wrestler who sat down with me and was like, ‘okay, I know there are lots of preconceived notions about wrestling in these scripts. Here are my thoughts on the truth of them.’ And it was cool because his thoughts were very much rooted in history and philosophy, so it was just a great perspective to get.” Ainsworth and Selbrede are joined by Italian actor and model Gabriele Lanzani for the wrestling portion of the series. Lanzani plays Auggie, a friend of Stone’s in the wrestling club.
“It was really cool because Gabriele actually just showed up to a wrestling practice and he really put the work in, he’s super thoughtful and dedicated to putting his spin on the role and I’m very excited to work with him,” Selbrede said.
Timothy the Turtle, meanwhile, is being held captive by a mysterious enemy, portrayed by Bob Crandall. “The Enemy– who is called that in the scripts– is a kind of antagonistic figure, who has his own designs for Stone and Timothy. He isn’t what you’d expect, and he brings his own flavor of humor and drama to the season.
But what of Timothy’s new family, glimpsed briefly at the end of Turtletastic S2E7?
“You’ll just have to wait and see,” Selbrede laughed. “The situation Timothy finds himself in may or may not be his fault, a bit.”
In addition to Lanzani, Ainsworth, and Crandall, Turtletastic: The Great Grappling Adventure is set to feature Angela Howell as Kat, Stone’s eccentric housemate. “Kat brings a really unique flavor to this season that Angela just knocks out of the park,” Selbrede raved. Other roles presently uncast for the season include a photographer named Callum, sisters named Holly and Isla, and a very opinionated ant.
“We’re doing a last crack at the scripts today,” Selbrede revealed. “After that, we start filming pretty quickly. Our hope is to have this season on Sparkk by the end of the year. Which I think is doable, but, you know, it all depends.”
